Recently I read an article written by an Italian journalist, <em>Roberto Cotroneo<\/em>, who defines himself as an intellectual, writer and poet. In this article he nostalgically (and also pathetically) criticizes\u00a0the alleged poor quality of the new mobile means\u00a0and softwares.<!--more Continue reading \u2192-->Naturally\u00a0he refers\u00a0to smartphones and famous photo-filter apps\u00a0like <em>Instagram<\/em> or <em>Hipstamatic<\/em> which, according to him, are producing horrible images. He complains\u00a0that\u00a0those photos are\u00a0over-saturated, excessively\u00a0contrasted and barely impossible to print due to their poor technical quality.<\/p>\n<p>Against these &#8220;ugly&#8221; images\u00a0he sets\u00a0the work and mindset of famous photographers like <em>Henri Cartier Bresson<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>For those of you who are able to understand the Italian language, the article is published <a title=\"Making horrible photos without knowing it!\" href=\"http:\/\/robertocotroneo.me\/2014\/10\/10\/fotografia\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To me his statement makes absolutely no sense. His mistake is quite\u00a0obvious: he tries to match\u00a0professional photography, the one made by image-educated artists, against\u00a0amateur photography\u00a0made by people who only collect\u00a0some life memories with absolutely no intention of\u00a0creating masterpieces.<\/p>\n<p>As I already stated in a <a title=\"&quot;iPhone photography and Photojournalism&quot; by Marco Ristuccia\" href=\"http:\/\/www.marcoristuccia.com\/blog\/2013\/08\/iphone-photography\/\" target=\"_blank\">precedent thought<\/a>, the key\u00a0is not the means\u00a0but\u00a0who uses it. I&#8217;m a strong believer of the fact that a smartphone put into the hands of <em>Henri Cartier Bresson<\/em> would have produced great images. The history has many examples of photographers who used poor quality cameras, exaggerated contrasts, over-saturated colors and other weird techniques. <a title=\"Julia Margaret Cameron\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Julia_Margaret_Cameron\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Julia Margaret Cameron<\/em><\/a>, to name one from the past, who created her wonderful out-of-focus portraits by means of a low-quality camera. Or <a title=\"Daido Moriyama\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moriyamadaido.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Daido Moriyama<\/em><\/a>, a Japanese contemporary photographer who uses a cheap\u00a0compact film camera and exaggerates rawness\u00a0and contrast to depict\u00a0his great imaginery. They evidently made a thoughtful decision on a specific &#8220;language&#8221;, the one that best fitted their way to see and tell things.<\/p>\n<p>The problem, if we can\u00a0call it so, is that the digital mobile era has made it possible for a large number of &#8220;uneducated&#8221; people to show their images to a vast public, thanks to the <em>Web 2.0<\/em>.\u00a0In the past, these photos were relegated to family albums, been shown\u00a0only to a narrow circle of friends and relatives. Moreover, it was the lab operator, again an image-educated person, who set\u00a0the colors and contrast\u00a0and produced the final image. Nowadays this so called\u00a0&#8220;post-production&#8221; is made by the very same person who creates\u00a0the image itself, and everything is put on\u00a0social networks without any censorship. What we see is the bare humanity exercising the\u00a0right to communicate free of\u00a0any intellectual barrier.<\/p>\n<p>And this may also have a fascinating aspect\u00a0for sociologists and those interested in studying people&#8217;s behaviours, not to mention\u00a0how happy marketing experts are with the\u00a0big opportunity to analyze that &#8220;stream of instinctiveness&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Of course\u00a0it would be great if everyone could receive a decent education in image language at primary and secondary schools, just like with spoken\u00a0and written\u00a0language.\u00a0But in the meantime we can&#8217;t ask\u00a0nor\u00a0expect that every person owning\u00a0a camera is able to\u00a0produce critics-proof\u00a0images, whether he\u00a0uses\u00a0a smartphone, a\u00a0<em>Leica<\/em>\u00a0loaded with Tri-X film or a $20K digital back.<\/p>\n<p>So, in order to prove it to myself\u00a0first, and to the others secondly, I took the decision\u00a0to experiment with a smartphone and\u00a0a filter-app by doing some street photography here in Berlin.\u00a0Of course I don&#8217;t claim to be <em>Cartier Bresson<\/em> at all, but if I will be able to obtain something at least a bit interesting, we could\u00a0certainly state that he would have created some of his amazing masterpieces even with a smartphone.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll shoot\u00a0black and white photos by using an <em>iPhone 4s<\/em> and <em>Hipstamatic<\/em>. And yes, they will be contrasted and quite raw, cause\u00a0I like this style\u00a0for street photography. The series\u00a0is simply called <strong>&#8220;Around #Berlin&#8221;<\/strong>. On top of this post you&#8217;ll find\u00a0a first bunch of images, I will also keep posting a photo stream on\u00a0my <a title=\"Marco Ristuccia's Instagram Profile\" href=\"http:\/\/instagram.com\/mristuccia\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram<\/a> and <a title=\"Marco Ristuccia's Facebook Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/marco.ristuccia\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a> pages.<\/p>\n<p>What I can\u00a0say\u00a0for sure is that I&#8217;m not alone: there&#8217;re a few professional photographers, much\u00a0more experienced and famous than me, who already started experimenting with mobile photography in\u00a0real assignments.
